St. Gallen during the World War II: In the mistaken belief that he could become a great singer in Germany, drifter Ernst Schrämli sells Swiss military information to a manipulative German Nazi spy. When his offence is discovered, Ernst becomes the first Swiss to be sentenced to death for espionage and treason. The naive Ernst is shot by his own troop at the age of twenty-three.
